“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light”.

– J.K.Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Lucy-May is a Reading based artist whose work primarily centres on nostalgia within the digital art medium. She looks at the passage of time contrasting found objects, like postcards, within the modern era. This can be seen with her latest work being comprised of digital manipulations displayed on LED screens. Stemming from the documentation of a box of miscellaneous objects, a process started to unfold. By sourcing items and reintroducing them into the artist world, an interest towards original purpose and the journey thereafter was discovered. Taking into account audience participation within the art world, which is unavoidable, this desire to translate nostalgia appeared. Although the public cannot be made to feel something, there is a definite sense of triggering memory within the work (even if it is a cliché in the art community!)
Understanding the workings of nostalgia became integral within her work, by looking at memory through objects, events or people. One source of material came through her mother’s Diana memorabilia. Due to not restricting herself, Lucy-May proceeded as if doing separate projects that sometimes became entangled meaning there is constant new material and therefore a range of wide unrestricted work.
